What is a photon? And what is the duality of a photon?

Published on 17-03-2024

In ancient times light was thought to be a stream of fine particles. In 1704, I. Newton used prism to divide white light into seven colours. So, he presented the basics of spectroscopy.

In 1807, T. Young proved that light is a wave with a double slit experiment. And in 1905, A. Einstein considered light to be a particle with energy depending on the wavelength, to explain the photoelectric effect. In this way, light has not only the properties of waves but also the properties of particles, so it was called photon.

It means that name of photon is approximately 110 years old. Nowadays, it is described as "light is a wave and a particle".

In 1982, Hamamatsu photonics revealed the duality of photon, where single photon is a wave and a particle.
